Puppy Love

The Story of Lola

I was minding my own business one afternoon when I received a call from James. The purpose of his call was to tell me that one of his employees was giving away puppies. He went on to tell me how cute they were and how much the girls need to have a dog. Somehow, I agreed to let the puppy come home for one day as a trial. Of course the puppy was adorable and scared to death! She took to me right from the start and I was blinded by her wimpering cuteness. She cuddled up to me and would hardly move. I thought, "What a mellow little thing." Rachel was hooked right from the start. She wouldn't let anyone else hold the puppy and was so sweet with her. Audrey was also very excited and asked me over and over again, "Mom, is this our doggy?" The whole evening was picture perfect. We sat outside as a family as the girls pet the dog and giggled whenever she whined or barked at them. James and Audrey went out and bought some dog food and a couple of chew toys. The kids named the puppy lola, and we were getting more and more comfortable with the whole idea of a family pet.
The night went relatively well. We only had to take the puppy out to "do her business" once in the night and then in the morning. She did her thing and hadn't had a single accident! Then, morning came. As I was fixing breakfast I had a new addition at the bottom of my feet. Not only were Audrey and Rachel whining at me about this and that, I now had a four-legged animal barking at me, and loudly! The girls got scared and started to run away from Lola which she saw only as a game. She began to nip at their feet and lick their toes! They didn't like the new Lola at all! She then ran into the family room and grabbed the curtain with her teeth and began to pull. I told her no, and she ran straight over to the rug and started chewing at it! At this I marched directly upstairs and said, "I don't want a puppy!" James laughed and said that he would take Lola back as soon as he was ready for work. In the meantime I put Lola in the Laundry room and closed the door. I got into the shower and by the time I got out James had brought her upstairs to play with the girls. I told him that he better keep a close eye on her and he promised he would. A few minutes went by and I went downstairs to find that Lola had knocked over her dog food and water all over the newspaper in the laundry room. The room reaked of dog and wet, soggy, newspaper! GROSS! Not to long after I had made my discovery I heard a shreak from upstairs! I heard Audrey yelling Lola went Poo Poo!!!! I took one look at James and said, "I'm not even going to look at it!" He cleaned things up as best as he could and we all said goodbye to Lola. I think that I am cured of puppy love for a long time! As for Rach - you decide!
